lately

I've been so busy pattern-making/cutting/stitching/pressing this week. Here are some snippets from what's been happening in studio featuring: my new iron (!), new threads, older shirts waiting to be joined by new shirts, and some good old-fashioned hand stitching.

Urban Collective | featured

As her final year project at university my friend/house-mate Kate made a magazine based around the Cape Town creative scene. It came out SO beautiful and professional (go, Kate!) and features Lauren Fowler on the cover (the very nice lady who taught me how to cross-stitch)
I was interviewed as one of five up-and-coming creatives! How nice :)
Thanks for featuring me, Urban Collective! If you'd like to have a page through the magazine then come 'round for a cup of tea. If you're lucky enough we might just let you use the much-coveted Country Road mug.

take a walk | newlands forest

One of my favourite things to do in Cape Town is take a walk through Newlands forest. Look how lush and green and peaceful it is! Plus all the best dogs go there (if you're wanting to meet some real cuties go on a Sunday morning)
last time I was there I found this quite-nice-but-it's-on-a-dirty-string-so-ew-i-don't-wanna-wear-it necklace

honky tonk

Don't you love it when you find a photograph so irresistibly nice you just have to rip it out of the magazine, even if you're in a doctor's waiting room/Exclusive Books? I found this one years ago in a NYLON editorial and it's been the cover of one of my piano books ever since

I do still occasionally rip pages out but agree with this girl's opinion, and love her alternative way to display your favourite stories :)

P.S. HERE's another really nice editorial, inspired by Roald Dahl stories!

d.i.y. Sunday : satin pillow cases

I found some cream-coloured satin while clearing out my fabric cupboard and it gave me an idea for a quick DIY project. My cotton pillowcases are quite old and sad looking so I made some smooth and sleek replacements out of the satin! Not only does it feel like you're sleeping on an angel's wig, but satin pillow cases are good for your hair, skin, and your allergies (I know it's true 'cause I read it in a Yahoo! article).

Pillow cases are really easy to make so I won't bore/insult you with a step-by-step. Just remember that when sewing something simple the best thing to do is to copy what you already have, not forgetting to add 1cm around the edges for seam allowance :)

Have a lovely Sunday! I'm just going to lie in bed & listen to The Drums (next week!)

constellations | Julie Nolan Jewelry

I love these pieces by American jewellery designer Julie Nolan. She's taken inspiration from the night sky, but in a unique and beautifully simple way. She punches holes into brass, gold and silver in the shape of constellations (such as Pleiades, Pegasus, Gemini, Scorpio, Libra etc) and turns them into pendants or bracelets.

I'm not a believer of star-signs but these are so pretty I might just embrace my inner Aquarian and impulsively buy one 'cause that's the kinda crazy things us air signs do, right?

have a look at her shop for more

ice cream sandwiches!

This weather has had me hankering after my favourite kinda ice cream: chocolate ice cream sandwiches. They don't make them anymore (or at least I can't find them anywhere) so I made some myself. All it took was some of my homemade ice cream  (I used Milo instead of peanut butter this time) and a packet of Tennis biscuits.
Just sandwich (ha) some ice cream between 2 biscuits and put them back in the freezer for a while before enjoying the hell of out them.

These are SO GOOD, GUYS!

d.i.y. Sunday : zines!

on Friday I went to a zine market and left with both a sweet zine and an urge to go out and MAKE ZINES.

zines are basically self-published books/comics/mini-magazines on WHATEVER topic you want: drawings of items you'd find in a kitchen, an illustration of a dream you once had, radical collages… Anything! I got this one by 'Jenna' which is full of poems using Google's search recommendations

I love it.

The zine market is open to anyone's creations. Keep in touch/in the loop through the facebook group make zines at night

HERE is a nice aticle from Rookie, which shows you how to get started and has some links to explain the concept of zines to you a little better and to get you inspired.

thanks

dear everyone who came to the City Bowl Market yesterday and shopped / visited,

thank you!

some random babe bought my green dress and looked a dream in it! (elephants from here)

the next market I'll be selling at will be the You, Me & Everyone We Know Market this coming Friday. It's a night-time market at the Labia and if you haven't been before, you should come 'cause it's always fun and there is a Slush Puppie machine so…!

ALL MY THINGZ will be on sale, and I'll be selling some lovely vintage (fine, old) items too! I've still got a few of my men's shirts, a swimsuit or two, dresses and lots more nice things you can buy for cheap, yay :)

It'll be your last chance to buy from me as this will also be my last market EVER. Ooh I feel quite sad saying/writing that :( I am moving away next year and am giving myself a holiday until then and not allowing myself to make more things 'cause I have to start minimising my life so it will fit into a suitcase, AH!

See you Friday! ♥
